5 Places to Buy House Plants

I’m always impressed by the amount of indoor-jungles I’ve visited from working in Real Estate and how well kept and lovely they make homes and apartments feel. Seeing others plants thriving always inspires me to go out and get my own — But unlike the homes I visit, my plants rarely survive more than a year and then I’m back to debating if I should try again, but never the less, my love of plants outweighs my guilt of losing them and each time they learn! I had a tiny avocado tree that lasted about five years! So, if you’re looking to grow your plant collection here are four great places to check out!

Garden Spot Nursery

This garden shop located behind Trader Joe’s is awesome. They have house plants of all sizes inside their main store. I’ve found the prices to be completely reasonable and you can buy bags of dirt, which was always an ongoing battle for me. I’ve found Money Trees, succulents, Prayer Plants — As you can tell from my naming vocabulary I am not the most informed plant purveyor, but the folks at Garden Spot totally are and can answer all your questions. They also have massive house plants available for purchase, I’ve seen plenty under $100. Visit Garden Spot Nursery Website.

My Garden Nursery

Yes! This is a different shop than the one listed above, I promise. This one is covered in purple flamingos AND has a shop cat! This store is much larger than Garden Spot and My Garden shines as this mythical escape which is just fun to explore it’s sprawling rooms. They have a collection of tropical plants and while they focus more on outdoor plants there is a bit for everyone from renters to homeowners alike. According to their website they offer: “Calatheas, Pothos, and Philodendrons. The Cactus room has tons of Cactus and Succulents like Echiverias, Agaves, and Euphorbias!” I mean, how can you not want to visit a shop that has a Cactus Room? Visit My Garden Nursery’s Website.

Babygreens Plant Shop

Rumor has it the business is currently for sale as of writing this in April 2025, but there are high hopes that the new owner will continue the incredible plant-shop staple that resonates with college students and community members alike. This shop is very fun to wander through. Babygreens focuses highly on indoor plants and they come in all shapes and sizes. It is impossibly hard to go into this cozy shop and not leave with something delightful. My latest purchase — whose name I have unfortunately forgotten already — literally looks like a plant from Baldur’s Gate Underdark, it has velvety leaves on the top, the stems are this translucent pale green and under the velt leaves are red veins. Truly one of the coolest plants and I did write down the instructions for this cutie and plan on having it for many, many seasons! Visit Babygreens’ Website.

For the REALLY Cool Plant Collectors —

These are some of the most magical spots I’ve come across that are hidden treasures for plant collectors. These are pop-up, mysterious, have-to-mark-your-calendar to find plant people. Ready? Here we go!

Happy Valley Carnivores

CALLING ALL CARNIVOUS PLANT SHOPPERS! This is THE cultivator of carnivorous plants you must purchase from, Ian is a great human and truly knows everything about these incredible plants. They appear regularly at the Bellingham Farmer’s Market and other Market-esque locations here and there. When you buy a unique treasure of a plant you are given great instructions on how to take care of your new carnivore and they just thrive and are so sturdy of plants when you buy these tiny creatures from Happy Valley Carnivores. Get your Audrey II at Happy Valley Carnivore’s Website.

Arrows Aim Greenhouse & Supply Co.

This is a new one to me but I am so excited to find them out in the wild! They feel like a Food Truck for plants and pottery. I love the entire vibe, aesthetic and the lore of finding them anywhere between here and Oregon! Find Arrows Aim Next Stop!

The Mysterious Plant Shelf

I’ve spotted this “shelf” on my adventures to Downtown Bellingham at the corner of High Street and Maple Street on the property of the Karate Church. It has treasures that range and vary and at this point I don’t even know how long this shelf will remain but every time I wander by it I love stopping and see what knick-knack real-plants have apparated there.
