I always think of my parents telling me to go into small businesses with my resume and drop it off, talk to the owner, etc. to my teenage brain this was a horrendous idea and in my original small hometown we didn’t even have that many small businesses.
However, in Bellingham there actually is a high likelihood the owners are working in the shop, restaurant, food truck, plant shop, bar, etc. — So in this town it’s not the worst idea.
One of my first jobs out of college came from sending an email into the void and the void answered shortly from the owner saying: “Oh my god, I’ve been so busy I haven’t even had time to post for an assistant. You’re hired!” and so began my journey in Public Relations.

Now, if you’re out of town or loathe the idea of walking into a small business, no prob, totally valid. Let me share with you some incredible job boards that locals know about.
This is a jobs board run by Pacific Northwest Media Group formerly Cascade Radio Group and can be a great scroll for local jobs. It used to be more businesses posting and it has seen been dominated by Express Employment Professionals listings, the downside to that being it feels harder to figure out the company who is actually hiring.
This is a board I found on accident one day that compiles many jobs boards from across different websites. So instead of visiting the City of Bellingham, City of Anacortes, Community College websites, this job board is the master job board for local Government jobs.

Western Washington University Jobs Board
Western Washington University (WWU) is one of the leading employers in the county behind Medical services which will be showcased next. The Job board is a little funky to navigate but always worth a look. I’ve met many employees from Western that told me they started as a temp hire and then got bumped to full-time real position. It’s the sneaky trick of getting your foot in the door. Be warned, at the time of writing this WWU is very slow in its hiring process so after you submit, the job closes, it could still be several weeks and they have had hiring freezes off and on plus layoffs have happened in March 2025. Still, a resource of jobs nonetheless.
St. Joseph Hospital / Peace Health
Is the largest employer in Bellingham and has a range of positions available year-round. I don’t know much about the levels of experience required or the scale of positions but it’s always worth a look!

All that said, I’ll give you the inside scoop — Craigslist in Bellingham is actually decent. From job postings to buying furniture, it’s not as spammy-sketch as you’d think. Or truly going business-to-business online and checking each small business’ website and socials. I’m always impressed by how many will post on social media when they are hiring.
